I woke to the sound of screaming.
I was pretty sure it wasn’t me. High, shrill, continuous. No, definitely not me. Metallic, close to my skull. Of course. My proximity transceiver was going crazy. I should have realized. Damn, when had I gotten so sloppy?
Demon nearby! The transceiver screamed. Get up and fight!
I tried to obey but when I moved my legs, a wave of pain burned through my lower body. A damage report flashed in red letters before my eyes compound fracture to left femur. Severe blood loss. Fracture to right patella. Ribs 4-7 fractured on left side. Punctured lung. Respiratory system compromised. Advice Don’t move. Wait for evacuation.
Yeah, like I needed to be told. I knew I was beat up like hell. For a moment I teetered on the edge of consciousness. I couldn’t pass out again. If I did, I was dead. The demon was setting off my transceiver. That meant it was still alive. And close.

Circle Spinner and Other Tales eBook E K Baxter

Some of the stories were good, some not so much. Personally, I don't enjoy stories where I feel that the author is trying to impress me with their intellect and mastery of words, rather impress me with your character development, your plot twists and your ability to make me feel a part of the story. Unfortunately I felt several of these stories fell into the first category. I'm a well educated person who has been an avid reader for over 50 years and I really want to see others enjoy reading as much as I do - I don't think that happens if the reader feels the author is talking way over their head and they can't tell what the story is really about or feel a part of it - just my opinion.

Each of these short stories ends with a twist, often leaving the reader to decide for themselves what the actual outcome is or was. The very imaginative plots and descriptions of characters made for an enjoyable read.

Circle Spinner and Other Tales
Elizabeth Baxter displays a great command of the English language. These five stories were written with much skill and the worlds they described felt complete and fully realized. Baxter does a superb job of creating a mood; she describes her settings with such detail that it feels as though she is simply reporting what she sees.

The stories are science-fiction and fantasy in nature, which happen to be two of my favorite genres. I liked the fact that with this collection I could be taken from the inner decks of a spacecraft to a bloodied battlefield from one tale to the next.

Chief among the stand-outs was the title tale, which creates a complex world where a pantheon of gods thrive on the worship of the masses while mystical circle-spinners attempt to keep them at bay. Also excellent were "The Following Star" and "Fallen Angel". The former is a sci-fi story which, for me, was made by the clever innovation of a "companion program" for a lonely boy, while the latter is the tale of a cyborg demon-hunter. Yes, a cyborg demon-hunter. 'Nuff said, right?

I was disappointed by "One of Those Days", which I found to be a bit strained and meandering. It seemed to me that the story served only as a vehicle to feature a wide variety of mythological creatures which the author wanted to utilize, such as ogres and water sprites.

However, the other four tales more than compensated for the one which I found lacking. Overall this collection is very strong and as such I rate it Four Stars. Baxter is an author whose work I will be seeking out in the future. Highly recommended.
Effectively transported me to a unique world and situation in each one of these creative tales. Good pacing, dialogue and diversity. Ms. Baxter has a talent for story writing and can expertly switch her voice to create a unique vibe in these varied tales. The author shows instead of tells and I got" each world created, complete with rules. Bravo.
I enjoyed this series of short stories. The only comment I have is to expand on some of the ideas. The author has a very clear picture in her head as to what she wants to say, but it doesn't always come across. I had to reread several portions in order to understand what she meant. Once I had the concept, it was easy reading. Very fun. Very enjoyable. Imaginative. I'm looking forward to reading more of her work.

Do not expect a high level of character development or plot. These are basic ideas that she has put to paper. Hopefully, they will grow into stories of their own.

Baxter has the ability to create a world, believable characters and pull you in so quickly that you don't even notice it. The writing is clear and concise (no unnecessary verbiage) and supports the storylines extremely well.

The characters are believable and developed very well in a short time.

A must read.
One of those random finds. Didn't quite work for me. While I am venturing out into scifi more and more, these stories were definitively more fantasy leaning, which just really isn't my thing. On the other hand the author didn't devolve into chicklit, the writing was uniformly solid and the stories were thoroughly original and reasonably entertaining. Not something probably that I'd read or look for again, but a fairly decent way to pass just over an hour. More so for fantasy fans.
Some of the stories were good, some not so much.
